OffShoot vs ShotPut Pro: Which Should You Buy?
OffShoot and ShotPut Pro are the two names most camera assistants and DITs have heard first. Both copy a card to several drives and verify the copy with checksums. The difference is in what sits around that core, and what it costs once you add the pieces your job needs.

OffShoot: the polished core, with the extras behind Pro
OffShoot (the product Hedge became in 2024) is well loved for being simple and dependable: source and destination verification, several checksum types, stop and resume, incremental backup, duplicate detection, presets, filters and a queue. The catch is the tier split. ASC MHL, the ingest browser, S3 transfer and API scripting are in the $249 Pro tier. If your productions ask for MHL, the realistic OffShoot price for you is $249, not $169. (OffShoot pricing explained.)
ShotPut Pro: the familiar offloader
ShotPut Pro is the long-standing, no-surprises choice: offload to multiple destinations, verify with checksums, hand over a PDF transfer report. At $169 it lands in the same place as OffShoot Standard, and it includes MHL, so for MHL-driven work it undercuts OffShoot Pro.
How to choose
- You want the most established pure offloader and MHL is not required: OffShoot at $169.
- You need MHL and a simple report and want to stay under $249: ShotPut Pro.
- You need S3 delivery, scripting or the ingest browser from the same vendor: OffShoot Pro.
The third option
If the choice is between paying $169 and $249 for a tool with some features held back, there is a third way to spend the money. Olycen is $129 once, with two Macs included, and has ASC MHL v2, xxHash/MD5/SHA-256/C4 checksums, PDF/CSV/ALE reports, proxies, LUT dailies and S3/SFTP delivery in the one price, with no Pro tier. It is newer than both of these, which is the honest trade-off: they have years of field history, and Olycen has a 14-day full trial so you can run it beside the one you already trust on a real card.
